He was reacting even worse than Tri had expected; almost instinctively, he reached out, trying to comfort the panicking Koi, laying one webbed hand across the merboy's shoulder, hoping that he could signal that everything would be okay.

The touch from the other was strange. Wet, webbed, foreign... Yet not. The shock of the familiarity runs through me as I grab his hand and shove it away from me. But, as my fingers met his, the strange and wet feeling evolved. It became something different. Cool, smooth, and comforting. Like a chilled bottle of water running soothingly along my skin. I let go of his hand with a gasp, I can feel my eyes widening and breath catching.
"W...wh... whaa...?"

My hand hung in the air for a moment after Koi let go; I couldn't believe it. That... couldn't have been what I thought it was.

Magic, I wrote, finally deciding. He wouldn't believe me, but that's okay. Humans didn't take the 'mate' thing well and I knew he must be at least half-human, and raised on Earth from what he'd said.
