It was a warm and sunny California day. The sound of waves crashing echoed in one merman's ears as he walked down to the beach; his long, ginger hair blowing out behind him. The male's emerald green eyes were watching the childen playing in the white sand and clear blue water. Once the merman, who's name is Talos, reaches the beach, he removed his shirt and slowly walked out into the water.

Sabre loved this job! The sparkling water...The sandy beach...The joyful screaming of the little ones. Yeah, who couldn't love a job like this.
Sabre was the lifeguard for this here piece of pristine California coastline. He got to wear the red shorts and billowy red jacket today. Excitedly, his chocolate brown eyes scanned the beach for any misbehaving or people in trouble. He seriously doubted it though. As his shoulder length brown hair indicated, there was only a slight breeze and a ton of gorgeous sunlight.

Once Talos was waist deep in the water, he turned back to look at the land, and emerald eyes met distant chocolate ones. The merman felt a tug on his heart, but ignored it. He wouldn't let what happened to his bearer happen to him.
(Ooh! Talos has a secret~ Can he keep it?)

Sabre hadn't been looking at anything in particular when his caught sight of a handsome young swimmer just entering the cool water. Normally, he would just spare the guy but one careful glance. But for some odd reason their eyes locked.
Sabre felt an odd attraction to him but brushed it off in favor of watching a twin pair of 2the year olds getting dangerously close to the shoreline.
Sabre blew his whistle at the inattentive parents. But the didn't hear him or didn't care.
Sure enough, one of the toddlers walked into the water. Luckily he stopped at the edge.
Sabre didn't stop. While still blowing wildly on his whistle, he leapt off of his podium and bolted for the kids.

The child was closer to Talos, so the merman picked him up and carried him out of the water.
"Hey... Stay out of the water unless you're with your parents, okay?" When he looked up, he found himself face to face with the lifeguard.
"If you'll excuse me, I must be leaving." The ginger said as he gently pushed past the brunette, their hands brushing. A jolt ran up his arm, and the merman took off as fast as he could.

Sabre was bolting full blast when he saw the stranger carefully lift the 2 year old out of the water and walk him out to the bright sand. He slowed down just enough to scoop up the other youngster and put him with his brother.
"Parents!" He forcefully growled. "Pay closer attention."
Sabre tried to stay close to the good samaritan. He wanted to thank the guy. It could have been a worse catastrophe without him. But just as quick as he was there, the young man tried to disappear. Sabre reached out all willy-nilly to try to grab him before he could take off. All he got was an odd tingling sensation. He stopped cold.
"I'm sorry." A wild haired woman distracted Sabre from watching the other male practically run away. "My boys are a bit enthusiastic about the water. Thank you sooo much Sir for saving their lives."
"It wasn't me who saved their lives Ma'am." Sabre replied cooly as he scanned the beach for his new friend. "It was him."
The mother looked where he pointed but shrugged. "Well anyway thanks." Then she looked over at her sons digging in the sand like dogs. "They are my whole world you know."
Sabre nodded. "Well, if you ever wanna sighn them up in water safety classes, go to the main guard building. Sign em up. Say Sabre sent ya and it's free."
The mother gave Sabre a tight bear hug. "Thank you! Thanks!" With that, she heard a high-pitched scream and ran back to her brawling twins.
Sabre couldn't stop staring at the beach area where that had run away. He didn't know why. But he had this great need to find that guy. But who, what, where was he?

Talos was racing off as fast as he possibly could, his emerald eyes watering slightly. Seeing someone he KNEW was his mate hurt him deeply, bringing up all the old memories. Shaking his head, he pushed down those memories, soon reaching his private beach. Stripping down, he changed into his merman form, and slipped into the water, going for a swim to calm his screaming nerves. His heart was telling him to go back to that lifeguard, but his brain was screaming at him not to unless he wants what happened to his bearer to happen to him. Swimming around aimlessly, he found himself once again in the water off the beach where the lifeguard worked. A scream escaped his mouth as something bit his fin.
"HELP!!!!!!!!!!"

Even though Sabre had helped save the lives of the toddling twins, he was suddenly feeling depressed. It felt like he was missing something. It was weird. And it only made sense.
Sabre sat slumped in his stand staring at the water thinking. He had remembered something about his parents teaching him about mates. That he was destined to meet another guy and that they will know that they are mates just by the feel of a tingle when their hands met. When he was younger, he used to think that the static electricity was that shock. Now, was it? He just didn't know.
Sabre's daydreaming was crashed when he heard a terrified yelp. He grabbed his binoculars and saw a HUGE school of playful dolphins surrounding a swimmer. He leaped into action bolting to the water. Careful so as not to scare the humans, he changed underwater to his water dragonis body. There, he communticated underwater to the dolphins. Hey guys, I think he's scared.
The small dolphins replied in unison, But he's a fish. We want to play. Make him play.
Sabre stopped in mid-swim. fish?
That's when he saw that the swimmer indeed was merman.

Talos stopped splashing, and realized that he was not surrounded by sharks, but by dolphins.
D-don't startle me like that... I thought that you guys were sharks... Looking forward, his breath drew in sharply again. A water dragonis.
W-what do you want? The merman asked the dragonis through his mind, his eyes wide. I'm sorry for coming into your territory... I was just going for a swim... Need to clear my head...

Sabre could see by his face that the merman was the man that helped save the kids earlier. He was actually excited. He swam around the merman in a tight circle almost making a whirlpool effect. Soon, all the dolphins joined in squeeking and beeping in almost a song.
The dolphins got so excited, they began leaping out of water in aches over the merman.
Sabre laughed in pure joy. Don't fear merman. We won't hurt you. I and my friends want you to stay. Play!!!
Sabre stopped swimming in favor of getting closer. He was finding that just being near the merman was making him feel better and whole and again.

Talos frowned, his fear turning to saddness. The last time he played was back before IT happened. He didn't want to. It brought on too many of the memories. "I-I'm sorry. I can't. Please let me leave..." He whispered, when he felt that tug on his heart again. Understanding dawned on him as he realized that this water dragonis was none other than the lifeguard from earlier. The saddness turned to fear.
"P-please let me go... You givers have caused nothing but trouble for me..."

Sabre felt himself drawing closer to the merman. He stopped when he heard the sadness in the merman's being. (The quick reply and my cell don't like italics I *Hey, don't be sad little merman. You are amongst friends.** The dolphins all schooled around them. **Friends** they all called in unison. But what came next surprised him...**Hey, just because you somehow know my sexual preferences doesn't change the fact that I am a friend.**

Talos blinked. He really doesn't know.
**Aren't you from Parinenai as well? Being a water dragonis and all... Surely you know about mating.**

**I am from here. But yes, I am a dragon. And yes, I know a little bit about mating.** Sabre replied softly.
**Oooooooo...** The dolphins all sang. **Sabre has a boyfriend! Sabre has a boyfriend! Sabre has a boyfriend!***
Sabre grumble but grinned ear to ear.

"I see... In that case, I have some advice for you. Go find some other sap to be your mate. Cause I'm not anyone's mate. I think mating is a load of crap. I've seen what happens to bearers in a mateship. Now please, call off your dolphins, and leave me be!"
