ATTENTION: This is a really important topic in keeping with so many news items recently. I am in my 50s and joined the forum but "chickened out" and left. I fear that age matters a lot.
How is the topic of age handled on the forum? I mean, many participants are underage, so isn't that a risk for an adult? I'm talking a scary issue here that might keep some adults from participating. Not everyone shares our enthusiasm for yaoi and M/M. They might misinterpret an older person's presence.
Has anyone brought up this concern? I would dearly love to participate but want safety for everyone. No adult wants to get in legal trouble if s/he is writing to someone not the legal age.
Please help me here. I'd gladly restore Easy "Cat" Tanner and Anton Arkady if I could be certain of the safety issue. If two people start writing a particularly mature storyline that can be read by someone much younger...
I'll keep checking back here for responses. I welcome and appreciate all input about this because it's a concern not only here but on other RP sites.
I want to join the fun, but I don't want to get into trouble for it. Thank you for your time. -- cynsemele/Anton Arkady

I do RP with someone older, but I don't RP anything inaprorpriate with that person. I mostly RP those things with people my age.

I think, that if you have, posted in the title or elsewhere, that the thread you are writing is meant for people that are mature, legal age, etc. That is all you should have to worry about. If the other person is not as old as they say they are and they join your thread knowing that they shouldn't, then it is they're own fault. They can't blame you for something like that if you warned them ahead of time.

Thank you for the feedback. I'd like to continue hearing opinions--pro and con. It's kind of you to be understanding and not think I'm some silly old lady. I love this site; the stories are wonderful!
Should people declare their age upfront or wait until they have a story thread underway?

Most of us don't mind telling others our real age...so just ask them if you want.

Um, considering that we often don't know how old the person on the other end is, that we have no clue if they're lying about their age and since we aren't soliciting the person themself, I'm not so sure it's a problem.
I could be wrong
But yeah, seriously, this may seem callous, but I have absolutely no interest in knowing anything about my rp partners. I'm interested in their writing skills. If somebody who's underage doesn't fade to black, time jump or whatever and decides to rp a scene that's considered mature, it's their own mistake. It's very easy to just not go there. I generally assume, if someone's here, on this site and reading and/or participating in "mature" threads, they're legally allowed to do so. I shouldn't have to worry about how old they are, especially since I have absolutely no proof about if what they're saying is the truth or not. I could tell you guys that I'm a 30 year old male living in Arizona with a wife and two kids and you have absolutely no way to prove me right or wrong. Saying your age upfront isn't going to help. You're assuming that people are being honest, when really, if someone wants to participate in a 'mature' thread, all they have to do is say that they're 18. I know that I was doing that at 15, sometimes, to read NC-17 stories.
The best thing to do is to have a warning on the site proper warning that there is some NC-17 material floating around and that all the members are supposed to be legal if they're reading/participating in it. Sometimes a thread starts out with a G rating and becomes NC-17 as the players go along, without them noticing and changing the rating. Not everything is labled to begin with. If you'll pardon the expression, shit happens.
So put up a sign somewhere saying that this site has potentially mature subject matter. I don't see why anyone should really be stressing about it. Already the half-naked boys kissing in the background should be some kind of clue.

Thank you so much for your eloquent response! I have been kept from participating for fear of possible legal problems. Perhaps I shall try once more. Perhaps Anton Arkady and Cat Tanner will return once more--if I can recall all that I wrote about Cat. I had trouble saving his bio but not the story thread I started. I LOVE your final statement, by the way! Thanks again! (cynsemele/Anton Arkady)

And if for some reason you don't like the half naked boys in the background, change it in your profile. Set it to 'skin 2' so that it just becomes black in the background with blue.

Oh I personally have nothing against them. I quite like them, in fact. I just think that seriously, when you come to the site and see half naked boys kissing, it should eb a clue that there may be mature subject matter floating around.

Very true. If you don't get the hint, maybe you're not as mature as you think you are...

I'm baaaack! Thanks to your input, I have restored profiles for Easy "Cat" Tanner and Anton Arkady, as well as a scene with Cat in Earth RPG.
I now feel reassured that I won't get in trouble, especially now that I've posted that NC-17 on Cat's Tale.
Again, thank you for your responses. I hope this discussion will continue because it's a very important topic and should never be downplayed. Perhaps it's only the older ones who can truly understand what is at stake. Yes. I understand that anyone can be anyone or anything they claim to be and no one would no the difference. But, the law can be verrrry scary!
OK. I'm going to stop rambling now, except to say that I LOVE all of the stories!

Thanks to your encouragement, I'm now on three forums: Zerca, 1987 and The Phantom's Opera, which features a number of gay/bi guys among its patrons. Hey! If anyone loves The Phantom of the Opera and wants to encourage some gay guy action there, check it out: www.phantoms-opera.com I hope this will get you there! We certainly could use more gay/bi guys even though they keep the encounters fairly tame. Still, there are some hot moments!
