“Yes, mother,” Cory and Rory said simultaneously as they always had.
Aida blinked and smiled across the counter at his boys. “Twenty four years and you two still catch me off guard every now and again. I don’t think you’ll ever be separated. Stars know what you’ll do once you both find mates.”
Cory and Rory looked at each other, a small smile crossing their faces before they turned back to their mother with a shrug. “We’ll be happy.”
“I know you will, darlings,” he said, serving them each a slice of cake - the usual reason his kids showed up nowadays. For food they didn’t feel like cooking. Aida didn’t mind though, he was glad none of his boys forgot him. Why, even James and Roux showed up weekly with their kids in tow. They hadn’t all gotten together in almost a year though, that made him a little sad. Brothers should spend more time together. Deciding to rectify the situation immediately, he started with his first set of twins.
“What are you two doing this Saturday?”
“Nothing, mother, why?” They asked.
“I want to have a family gathering just me, your father and our boys and grandchildren. Oh! And their mates, of course. It’ll be hard locating your brother while he’s on set but I think I can lure him with this cake, eh?” he asked the last reffering to Ori, the director in the family.
Both boys nodded enthusiastically as they pulled the fork from their mouths. “Yes, mother.”
Aida reached over and patted their cheeks. “Saturday then, my darlings.”

Visiting their mother every Monday had become a force of habit and one that Cory and Rory quite enjoyed. They loved their mother dearly and their father, though anyone looking could clearly see that despite being Giver’s they favored their mother remarkably. If Aida Jukar ever wondered what he’d look like as a Giver he needed look no further than his first set of twins.
Still, they got the feeling their mother was lonely. Years and years of raising eight children and now he had an empty house. It was saddening to them and made them want to do something about it. “Maybe a pet?” they said, turning to stare at one another before smiling together and grasping one another’s hand.
Aida may not be a dog person as he didn’t particularly favor James’s Pudge but maybe something. And with that thought in mind, they headed to the nearest pet store that catered to both Mentsiquarian animals and off-planet ones.
